Buju Banton wants retraction and apology from Wayne Wonder and his wife over alleged defamatory remarks
International reggae superstar Buju Banton has given fellow entertainer Wayne Wonder and his wife until Wednesday to retract alleged defamatory remarks posted on Wayne Wonder's page and to issue an apology.
The couple was served last week Friday and was given five days to respond.
The viral dispute between Banton, whose given name is Mark Myrie, and the couple Vanwayne and Jacqueline Charles was reportedly over songwriting credit for the hit single "Murder".
During the dispute, which erupted last week, Charles’ wife was heard in an audio posted on her husband’s social media page on which several damping claims were aired.
The post was then reposted by a local entertainment website.
Myrie's legal and management teams, in a statement released today, have categorically rejected and denounced the remarks as false and defamatory
"The statements in question falsely allege the commission of serious criminal acts. These allegations are entirely untrue, without factual basis, and have caused significant reputational harm to our client both in Jamaica and internationally,” the statement said.
According to the statement, a formal legal notice has been issued to the responsible party, requiring the immediate removal of all defamatory content, together with a full and unequivocal retraction and public apology.
It also stated that the continued circulation of these false statements across multiple digital platforms is being actively monitored.
"Our client reserves all rights and will pursue all available legal remedies against any individual or entity involved in the publication or further dissemination of these defamatory claims.
It added further that, "Buju Banton has built a global reputation over decades through his music, cultural impact, and advocacy. These false allegations stand in stark contrast to that legacy and will be addressed with required gravity.
Attorney Rita Allen-Brown is representing Myrie.
