A man who allegedly confronted police with an illegal firearm was shot and injured in Portmore, St Catherine on Friday.

Reports are that about 3:05 a.m., the owner of a motor car was at home near Edgewater when he heard his vehicle’s alarm.

He went outside and reportedly saw a man with a breaking instrument attempting to force entry into the vehicle.

The homeowner called out, and the man ran. An alarm was raised, and members of a police team responded.

When the officers caught up with the man, he allegedly pointed a handgun in their direction.

Police reported that they took evasive action and opened fire, after which the man escaped.

Further reports are that police later received a call from Police Emergency, which led them to an address in Edgewater where a man was found suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds.

He was positively identified as the suspect who had allegedly attempted to break into the vehicle and confronted the police, reports say.

The man was assisted by the police to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment.

The Independent Commission of Investigations has launched a probe into the incident.
