Growth & Jobs | June Bryan – celebrating a legacy of service and leadership at Biomedical Laboratory
In a professional landscape increasingly defined by rapid job hopping in pursuit of the next best opportunity, June Bryan stands apart. As administrative manager and the longest-serving employee at Caledonia Medical Laboratory (Biomedical), she has built not merely a career, but a legacy–one grounded in service, leadership, and unwavering integrity.
As we reflect on Women’s History Month under the theme “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future,” Bryan emerges as a living embodiment of that vision. From the era of manual testing to today’s digitally driven, internationally accredited institution, her 39-year journey is a blueprint of what happens when passion meets purpose.
Her tenure at Biomedical proves a simple yet powerful truth: when commitment is consistent, opportunity follows.
Bryan’s career path is as diverse as it is distinguished. Beginning as an emergency technologist, she went on to serve as a medical laboratory technician and later as a training officer, steadily building technical and institutional expertise.
Her transition into leadership saw her become the front office and customer service manager, positioning her at the nerve centre of the organization. Today, her responsibilities span inventory management, procurement, business development, and facilities management–a multifaceted portfolio few professionals can rival.
When asked what has anchored her to a single institution for nearly four decades, her answer is both simple and profound.
“The opportunity to grow and develop kept me here,” she reflects.
Supported by her managers and fuelled by relentless curiosity, Bryan continually expanded her skill set. “I was always learning something new and, above all, I was very motivated,” she adds.
DEFINING MILESTONES
Throughout her tenure, Bryan has remained deeply invested in Biomedical’s growth – so much so that the laboratory’s achievements feel personal. Two watershed moments stand out.
The first was being part of the team that secured ISO 15189 Accreditation in 2013, a rigorous international standard that certifies quality and competence in medical laboratories. The second was helping the organization reach over 50 collection centres islandwide, a milestone that coincided with Biomedical’s 50th anniversary.
These achievements reflect more than corporate success; they mirror her lifelong commitment to excellence.
As diagnostics moved from test tubes to touchscreens, Bryan believes the core mission has never changed.
“Caring for our clients, doing the right thing the first time, and ensuring authentic results,” she says firmly. “Doctors rely on us, and that trust is earned.”
Her philosophy underscores Biomedical’s reputation and reinforces the human responsibility behind every diagnostic outcome.
For her, leadership has never been about titles. Her greatest pride lies in the success of those she has mentored.
“I feel really happy when I see people develop, excel and make a positive contribution to society,” she shares.
She beams when recounting stories of former staff – both men and women – who pursued other careers, only to return and credit her guidance as instrumental in their growth.
One moment that stands out is her first year as front office manager, during which she ensured that every phlebotomist under her supervision was trained and certified through the University of Technology (UTech). It was not management – it was empowerment.
Yet Bryan is candid about the realities of leadership.
“You have to make decisions on your feet and think quickly. You have to be open and honest, and you cannot compromise your standards.”
THE NEXT CHAPTER
As she reflects on her journey, Bryan finds peace in a simple, powerful truth.
“What gives me peace is knowing I gave my best – every day, no less,” she says with the quiet confidence of a veteran.
Looking ahead, her hope is that the women who follow in her footsteps will carry Biomedical’s signature integrity beyond Jamaica’s borders, serving the world with the same standard of excellence.
If she could speak to the young woman who walked into Biomedical 39 years ago, her advice would be timeless:
“Keep doing what you do best. Keep the passion for what you do and love what you do.”
Decades later, that passion remains fully alive. June Bryan continues to stand as a cornerstone of Biomedical, proving that in a world of constant change, excellence, loyalty, and integrity remain the finest medicine of all.
