Objective:
Students will identify and describe the parts of a circle:
centre, radius, diameter, circumference, sector
STORY: “THE PARK DESIGN PROJECT”
The Circle Community Park Committee will be making a park for their new community and has hired you and your friends as Junior Designers to help build the new community park. The park includes circular features such as fountains, tracks, and gardens. To ensure this project is done correctly, we will need to ensure we have all its measurements.
1. ENGAGE – PART 1: THE MYSTERY OF THE FOUNTAIN
The park designer shows you a plan for a large circular fountain in the centre of the park.
She says:
“This fountain is perfectly round, but we need to understand its parts so we can design paths, fences, and decorations around it.”
Some workers describe the fountain differently:
One points to the middle.
Another measures across.
Another walks around the edge.
The designer asks:
“Can you identify and name each part of this circle?”

The Walking Track
The designer wants to build a walking track around the fountain. This will allow persons to run or walk around the fountain.
