Seafarers and boating lovers donned their finest garb to pay tribute to those who completed one of the toughest Pineapple Cup races in 32 years, at an awards ceremony at the Montego Bay Yacht Club last Friday night.

Held on the eve of Valentine's Day, Cupid was very active, making his rounds and showering a lot of love on the winning boat - Shockwave from the United States. Although members of the winning party had to return to Florida before accepting their prize, those who stayed for the glitzy affair celebrated their success.

The event, which started in 1961, runs from Miami to Montego Bay, and now occurs every two years, and had 12 entries coming from several cities in the US, including Chicago, Atlanta, New York and Florida, complemented by a Jamaican team from Montego Bay.

The Jamaican skipper, was no other than the yacht club's commodore, Nigel Knowles, who received so many bruises during the trip to Jamaica that he is suggesting a name change from Pineapple Cup, to 'Spine-cracking Cup'.

The well-attended event was punctuated with immense laughter, camaraderie, and anecdotes of their days at sea.

This year's event was supported by the Jamaica Tourist Board, JetBlue Airways, Appleton Estate Rum, Doctor's Cave Beach, Select Brands, Budget, Juici Patties, Wisynco and CafÈ Blue.
