Couples Negril and Swept Away celebrate their 17th anniversary
It felt like a tenacious battle between two 17-year-olds - Couples Swept Away and Couples Negril - last weekend to see who could throw the better, more fabulous anniversary party.
Swept Away was up first on Friday night with a New York City-themed affair for which no effort was spared to recreate the magic of the Big Apple. Subway signs and traffic lights led the way to the Aura Lounge where the virtual trip to the big city kicked off. A live band played jazzy renditions of the most famous New York-inspired hits, including, of course, Sinatra's unofficial anthem for the city - New York, New York.
There was a New York Jets sports bar (which proved a favourite hangout spot among football-loving guests); and a hot dog stand-type slider cart which served up chips and tasty sliders with near-countless trappings.
A martini and mojito bar dispensed glass after glass of specially crafted concoctions, such as the 'Jamaica Avenue Mojito', and the Manhattan-Tini'.
Later, it was time to feast on unforgettable creations while the headline act for the night, the talented Gem Myers, took to the stage belting out Whitney Houston classics with amazing skill and ease that had everyone on the dance floor.
On Saturday night, it was time for a Carnival at Couples Negril. Dancers in feathery carnival costumes, big screens showing scenes from road marches, and steel band music transported guests to bacchanal central - and nobody wanted to leave. A special calypso punch was served in real coconuts, setting the mood for the rest of the evening. Tables set up at poolside under the starry sky marked the centre of activity where guests dined on meals inspired by the different Caribbean islands.
On stage, dexterous fire dancers, the mesmerising Silver Birds steel band, and later, The Dragonaires kept spirits high and guests dancing. It was a spirited celebration that capped off the special weekend for a couple of very special resorts.
