Spain celebrates National Day
Spanish Ambassador Josep Bosch and his wife Teresa Gonzalez, welcomed over 200 guests from a wide cross-section of the Jamaican society to their residence recently to celebrate the National Day of Spain.
Spain observes its National Day on the 12th of October, a day referred to as "El Dia de la Hispanidad" (the day of Hispanic brotherhood) as it celebrates the bonds of friendship and historic and cultural links binding the Hispanic world. In fact, October 12 is an official holiday observed by many countries throughout the American continent.
In their respective toasts, Minister of Justice, Delroy Chuck, representing the Government of Jamaica, and Ambassador Bosch, highlighted the excellent relationship that exists between Jamaica and Spain, as well as both countries' continued partnerships across various sectors. The Spanish Embassy was established on the island 40 years ago.
In keeping with the theme, of 'Hispanity', performances included Latin American and Caribbean group Harmony. They delighted the guests with dancing to music from various Hispanic countries beginning with flamenco from Spain and transporting the audience to Panama, Mexico, Cuba, Brazil, and Chile, just to name a few. The group's apt finale included traditional folk dance and dance hall from Jamaica reinforcing Ambassador Bosch's call for Jamaica to "feel a part of the Iberoamerican Community celebration."
The event was catered by MÈlia Braco Village and received sponsorship from Spanish companies with current operations in the island - Iberostar, RIU, H-10, Excellence, Bahia Principe and Grand Palladium. Here are the highlights.
