SAJ celebrates with graduating class at adopted school

Nineteen young students at the Marcus Garvey School in Greenwich Farm, Kingston, proudly did a slow march up to the front of the church hall in early July to a round of cheers and the flash of camera phones held by beaming parents and faculty members.

The 13 girls and six boys had earned their place at the next education tier by successfully completing their studies at the early-childhood level. According to Principal Kereen Hibbert, the school had earned accolades from the Ministry of Education because of improving educational performance.

"The school received an award from the ministry congratulating us on the major improvements made in the educational standard. Marcus Garvey was also listed as the leading school in its zone or area," she told the audience in attendance at the graduation exercise.

The students were rewarded with graduation gifts of backpacks filled with school supplies courtesy of the Marcus Garvey Staff Committee of the Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ).

The school is sponsored by the SAJ, which pays teacher salaries for eight months of the year. However, the graduation gifts were provided out of monies contributed separately by the SAJ staff, which also funds a feeding programme for the students on a monthly basis out of their own pockets.
