SAJ honoured with Solid Alliance Award from Kingston Wharves
THE SHIPPING Association of Jamaica (SAJ) has been recognised for its longstanding contribution to the nation’s maritime sector, receiving the Solid Alliance Award from Kingston Wharves Limited (KWL) during the company’s 80th anniversary banquet, held on June 4.
The award celebrates a partnership that spans eight decades and acknowledges the SAJ’s pivotal role in the growth and development of the Port of Kingston.
“In recognition of a steadfast alliance that has shaped our 80-year journey of excellence. Your invaluable partnership has contributed significantly to our growth and the development of the industry,” the citation read. “Kingston Wharves Limited takes this opportunity to extend gratitude to SAJ for its sterling service over the years,” the citation stated.
Reflecting on the award, Corah Ann Robertson-Sylvester, president of the SAJ noted: “This award is a profound honour for the Shipping Association of Jamaica. It symbolises the strength of the partnership we have built with Kingston Wharves Limited over the past eight decades, a relationship rooted in shared values, and a common vision for the growth of Jamaica’s maritime industry.
Founded in 1939 as a labour hire organisation, SAJ began its formal partnership with Kingston Wharves in 1945, the year of KWL’s establishment. For much of the Port of Kingston’s modern history, the two organisations have operated in close alignment, with SAJ providing a stabilising force in labour relations and underpinning operational efficiency across the port.
For 86 years, SAJ served as a key labour provider to the Port of Kingston, supporting the port’s growth through changing times and market demands. However, this long-standing role has evolved in response to modern port management strategies. At the start of this year, SAJ officially ended its role as a labour provider to the Port of Kingston, a decision that followed extensive discussions with stakeholders and reflected the port’s shift toward self-managed labour operations.
Despite this shift, the association continues to contribute its expertise to the industry through its joint venture with Kingston Wharves Limited in Caribbean Stevedores Limited.
“As we look to the future, we remain committed to working collaboratively to support the continued development of the Port of Kingston and to advancing Jamaica’s position in global trade,” Robertson-Sylvester said.
