WESTERN BUREAU:

The RuJohn Foundation, a non-profit organisation, is on a mission to provide the necessary tools for education to rural and inner-city schools throughout Jamaica and the United States.

Founded in 2003 in honour of Ruth and John Tulloch, the grandparents of Andrew and Christina Bachelor, CEO and president, respectively, each year, RuJohn organises an islandwide programme that provides academic scholarships, school supplies, athletic gears, computer equipment, and funding for educational institutions.

This year, in addition to their ongoing 2014 and 2015 scholarships, some $4.6 million was disbursed to students attending Cornwall College, The Manning's School, Wolmer's Girls, and Kingston College.

The presentation ceremony, held at the Iberostar Rose Hall last Wednesday, had one of its biggest supporters, Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller, as guest speaker.

One of the five recipients received the award named in her honour, valued at $700,000.

This year's efforts included youth-focused financial literary workshops, sports camps led by professional athletes, and acting workshops led by successful actors. Among the big names involved were Indianapolis Colts' Darius Butler; Boston Legal's Jaleel White; actress Aisha Hinds, who has appeared on Law and Order SVU; The West Wing's Dule Hill; and Empire's Jussie Smollett.
