Women's Leadership Initiative premieres Queen of Katwe
The Women's Leadership Initiative (WLI) hosted their annual movie fundraiser on Tuesday with the premier of 'Queen of Katwe' at Palace Cineplex in the Sovereign Centre.
Guests were warmly welcomed during the cocktail reception, and able to enjoy a glass of vino, before settling in to watch the highly anticipated film.
The movie is based on the true story of Phiona Mutesi, who was raised in the slums of Katwe, Kampala, Uganda, and who was a chess prodigy.
The movie choice was a calculated one by the WLI, a subsidiary of the United Way of Jamaica, who brought on board the Magnificent Chess Foundation of Jamaica to be a part of the night.
The group focuses on women and children, advocating against violence and sexual abuse against children as well as supporting women's rights and education. They encourage wholesome fun and according to WLI Chair Eva Lewis, this motivational movie could not be more fitting.
Despite the late start, the movie was definitely worth the wait - inspirational not only for young women, but a lesson for children everywhere - that irrespective of their background, they can do just about anything they put their mind to.
