The Jamaica Manufacturers' Association (JMA), on Wednesday, launched the inaugural Jamaica International Exhibition (JIE) at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in St James.

Officially launched by Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries Karl Samuda, and endorsed by JAMPRO chairman Senator Don Wehby, the JIE will run from June 1-4 at the same venue.

There, more than 600 buyers and suppliers from the Caribbean, North and South America, Canada, China, and Europe will converge, offering business opportunities to stakeholders.

"The JIE is a new and exciting venture which will offer businesses an opportunity to interact and rub shoulders with some of the largest and most important traders worldwide, up close and personal. It is aimed at discovering new markets and exploring untapped potential," Metry Seaga, president of the JMA, disclosed.

"We are moving outside our comfort zone and looking at broadening our horizon. The JIE, we feel, will fill a void that currently exists to bring businesses from around the world into Jamaica to sell their wares ... to see what opportunities exist in Jamaica."

The JMA president said his organisation would be working closely with JAMPRO and the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries to ensure that Jamaica has a successful show.

The JMA, he added, would be playing the role of host, "ensuring that this first-class expo will have the desired effect", putting the sector on the world stage and giving it a major shot in the arm.

"We are one of the perennial engines of growth and a major employer of persons," he added. "We are happy to be doing this at a time when Brand Jamaica needs this kind of visibility to take it on a path of economic growth and prosperity."
