Jamaica's newly-appointed high commissioner to the United Kingdom (UK), Seth George Ramocan and his wife Dr Lola Ramocan, were officially welcomed at a special reception with the diaspora community and business leaders at the High Commission of Jamaica in London recently.

The reception drew guests from London, Birmingham, Nottingham, Manchester and Leeds to meet with the high commissioner who arrived in the UK to take up his new post last December.

Deputy High Commissioner Angela Rose Howell, opened the proceedings, noting that Ramocan will also be Jamaica's ambassador to six other European countries including Ireland, Finland, Cyprus, Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

Ramocan began his response by praising the work of previous high commissioners, "each of whom has done an awesome job in promoting the work of the mission on behalf of Jamaica." Said Ramocan: "I am here to build on that work which has been done by my predecessors and it's my duty to continue that tradition."

He praised the UK's Jamaican community for distinguishing themselves in various fields, attaining some of the highest positions in the area of business, public and private sectors, government and the clergy."This is quite a credit to you, Jamaica and the UK. In pursuit of your advancement, you have not left Jamaica behind and along the way you have found the time to give of your skills and time to build the UK Jamaican community and also give support to Jamaica," he said.

Ramocan said many activities would be planned to mark Jamaica's 55th Independence anniversary which coincides with the World Championships being held in London in August, where Jamaican sprint king, Usain Bolt, will be the star attraction.

"I will be communicating the plans we have in mind at the high commission for a year-long celebration of Jamaica's 55th Independence anniversary on the theme 'Celebrating Jamaicans at Home and Abroad'," Ramocan said.

After the formalities, Ramocan and his wife mingled with guests.
