AMCHAM Business and civic leadership awards a fab party

Members of corporate Jamaica who attended AMCHAM's Business and Civic Leadership Awards for Excellence at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel, New Kingston, on Wednesday night probably had a hard time waking up yesterday morning. It was a mid-week party of epic proportions.

Forget what you thought you knew about corporate Jamaica after finishing a day of making serious business decisions, the night is reserved to let one's hair down and that was done as individuals were celebrated, as well as companies that have been driving economic and social progress in Jamaica through community-building activities.

In her brief remarks, newly installed president of AMCHAM Jamaica Allison Peart said: "I hope that your contributions inspire others as we all come together to build a country of which we can be proud."

Among those who have played their part was chairman of Stewart's Automotive, Diana Stewart, who received The Presidents' Award for her philanthropic efforts, including the Establishment of the Community Poilicing Services Centre in Grants Pen, which has drastically reduced the level of crime in the area.

Retired chairman of GraceKennedy Douglas Orane received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his commitment to Jamaica's economic growth and development and he also gives back to the community through a number of initiatives, especially at his alma mater Wolmer's Boys School.

Stewart said that she would do it all over again. Orane went a step further in challenging those in the room: "Tomorrow, find one young person and help that child be a productive young adult. that's how we change Jamaica one person at a time."

Who knew that AMCHAM knew how to throw such a party? Saxophonist Nicholas Laragque can play anything with his impressive lungs, and that he did during dinner. With the legendary Fab 5 as the backing band, Rojjah Mendez had the house rocking. A mix of Micheal Jackson, Bruno Mars, James Brown all wrapped into one, he had the room rocking. And the cherry on top was the amazing voice of Kimiela Candy Candy Issacs, the only blind graduate of the Edna Manley college of the Visual and Performing Arts.
