UWI, Real Mona in Super League final
University of the West Indies (UWI) and Real Mona will contest the final of the Jamaica National (JN)/ Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Super League competition.
Both scored 1-0 wins over Brown's Town and Rockfort, respectively, at Winchester Park yesterday. In the opening match of the double-header, UWI's Akeem Thenstead got the winner for his team in the 69th minute.
In the second game, Leonard Gooden netted a 103rd minute extra-time goal to lead Real Mona to victory over Rockfort.
Marcel Gayle, coach of the UWI, said his team had to work very hard for the victory. "I thought we played stoutly. Brown's Town pushed us really hard," said Gayle.
"We now know that we have a lot of work to do before the final and so we going to hit the ground running in our next training session," Gayle said.
The UWI dominated the match from the opening whistle, but they were kept at bay due to solid defending by a well-organised Brown's Town defence.
UWI rewarded
UWI were finally rewarded when Thenstead slammed home a right-sided cross from Andre Bernal.
In the second game, Rockfort and Real Mona played to a tame 0-0 draw at full time. Gooden netted the winner for his team when he fired home from inside the six-yard box.
David Laylor, coach of Real Mona, was very delighted with his team's performance.
"It was a hard game. Rockfort started well, but we just soaked up the pressure and took control of the game in the latter stages," said Laylor.
