G.C. Foster shine at Church Teachers' College 5K

G.C. Foster athletes dominated the podium positions of the inaugural Church Teachers' College 5K in Mandeville last weekend.

Despite missing the road directions twice, Oshane Archibald was the star of the proceedings, as he stopped the clock at 15:57 to ward off his teammates, who took the first five positions. Second was Loren Haye, while third went to Chester Chung.

The female 5K was also won by G.C. Foster athlete Danielle Shaw, with her teammates Roshay Barrett and Angella Senior taking the top runner-up spots, respectively. G.C. Foster also secured the Most Outstanding Senior Team award, while the junior team award went to Mandeville-based May Day High.

The 5K Walk went to Manchester-based athletes, both of whom are teachers by profession. The male 5K Walk was won by Jon Oliphant, while physical education teacher at Holmwood Technical, Natasha McKenzie, won the female equivalent.

Garret Donald, at 10 years of age and who came 28th in the male 5K, was highlighted as the youngest performer, while Dudley McLean, representing Church Teachers' College, was the oldest male.

The incentive-rich Central Manchester Sports Development Netball League, which is sponsored by Central Manchester Member of Parliament Peter Bunting, came to an end last weekend at the Comfort Community Sports playing field.

Williamsfield Strikers claimed the main prize money of $60 after landing the Senior League Netball title with a close 18-16 win over Bombay Queens. Losing finalists Bombay collected $40,000.

The junior title was won by Newleigh All Stars, who pocketed $50,000 following a 22-20 win over Albion United. The Albion team secured $30,000.

Since two tiers of competition were introduced for the first time, the organisers also appeased with a Champion of Champions trophy and prize money. Senior division champions Williamsfield duly obliged and whipped Newleigh All Stars 28-6 to pocket another $50,000. The Most Valuable Player award went to Samantha Martin of Williamsfield Strikers, while Pear Tree were adjudged the most disciplined team.

The community teams will now do battle in the football competition.

Howie Chin Memorial

Mount St Joseph have begun their defence of both the girls and boys' section of the Howie Chin Memorial Cup for Preparatory Schools in Manchester on a winning note. This year's fifth staging kicked off on Friday, October 2, at the champion's home on Manchester Road.

In the girls' section, Chae Francis' strike in the 28th minute proved the only goal in Mount St Joseph's opening match against Yabnel. The boys, however, made a more emphatic start, getting the better of El Instituto 2-0. An own goal as well as a Rhamon Walter's strike settled the contest.

The most convincing win on the opening day was achieved by Knox, who delivered a 6-0 thumping of Yabnel. There were double strikes for Jahmal Lovelace and Shevaughn Fearon.

In other boys' matches, Belair had a 3-0 shutout of Charagape, while Emmanuel achieved the same against Sacred Heart.

In the second girls' matchup of the day, Belair were 2-0 winners over Emmanuel.

KNOX to host 40th anniversary 7K

As part of its commemoration of 40 years as a community college, the Manchester-based Knox is organising a 7K Run and Walk at its Cobbla Campus on Saturday, October 31.

Categories for both events will be 19 and under, age 20 to 39, and 40 and over, for which the organisers are offering prizes.

Interested athletes and enthusiasts can go to the school's website at kcc.edu.jm to register. Entry fees include individual, group and student rates.

The top teams and players who participated in the three sporting events run by the sports department of the Power of Faith Ministries (PFM) were rewarded for their exploits in the 2015 season during an awards function atop the roof of the PFM multipurpose complex recently.

The major awards in cricket went to PFM International as they grabbed their seventh hold on the trophy. Second went to Faith Temple New Testament.

Top awardees in cricket were as follows: best batsman was Lloyd Gould, who played two matches, hit a total of 86 runs, with a highest score of 60 from 31 deliveries. Leading bowler Peat Salmon, who played in two matches, took five wickets from eight overs, and conceded 26 runs at an average of 2.8; best wicketkeeper, Glenn Wellington, who made three stumpings, took three catches and scored 65 runs (with a topscore of 36 not out) at an average of 32.5 in three matches; Best all-rounder, Jermaine Hewitt, who played four matches and took five wickets off 9.2 overs, conceding 89 runs at 22.2. He also scored 81 runs, with a highest score of 44, at an average of 20.25.

PFM won the netball title, while Nickesha Duncan of Equator Faith Mission was the top shooter. She scored 82 at 78.8 percent accuracy.

First-timers Fair View Open Bible from Spanish Town took the football title, while 65 Waltham Park New Testament Church of God placed second. The leading goalscorer was Hope and Mercy Ministries' Jason Williams, with four goals.

Best goalkeeper was Shaven Sean-Paul of 65 Waltham Park.

A special award went to Melton Chambers, who walked away with the Lester Brown Trophy for being the best Under-17 player for 2015. Umpires and referees were also recognised for their contributions.

Westmeade seek revenge against Garveymeade

Garveymeade, though playing at home, will feel the pressure as they face a resurgent Westmeade in the 10th round of the South East St Catherine Constituency Domino League, sponsored by Member of Parliament Colin Fagan, tomorrow afternoon at the Garveymeade Sports Club.

Garveymeade beat Westmeade 250-244 in their first meeting of the season. However, both clubs have travelled different paths since then. Westmeade are tied for third on 20 points, while Garveymeade are in sixth place with 17 points.

In other games, last-place Portsmouth (three points) are at home against Ken's Wildflower, while second-place Cumberland (21) travel to Waterford (20 points) in what is expected to be a keen battle. All games begin at 1:00 p.m.

Last week, Passagefort United chalked up their ninth consecutive win, as they humbled Waterford 250-241, while Westmeade crushed Portsmouth 250-197 and Ken's Wildflower cut down Garvemeade 250-216.

Highlight Strikers win at last

It has been a long wait, but Highlight Strikers finally got their first win of the season, after they defeated Memory Lane 300-279 in the Jamaica Domino Council Association (JDCA) League last Sunday.

In another top game, Naggo Head outlasted Eradication 300-297 in a countdown.

In other results, mid-season champions Spit Fyah dismantled Small Axe 300-241, Giants trampled Sour Sop Tree 300-247 and Spring Village clobbered Ten to Ten 300-190.

Two games were not completed due to power outage. Table-toppers Caribbean Classic were leading 273-258 over Tambrind Tree, while Right Stuff had a 267-259 lead over Exceptional International when both matches had an abrupt end. The JDCA officials will give a ruling on these two games in short order. The competition continues tomorrow.

Naggo Head win Portsmouth Primary football rally

Naggo Head Primary emerged champions of the second staging of the Portsmouth Primary one-day football rally after their 3-2 penalty-kick win over Waterford in the final at the Portsmouth Primary playing field on Friday, October 2.

The game went into penalties after regulation and extra-time didn't produce any goals. Rassico Rose, Damion Abrahams and Demario Graham scored Naggo Head's penalties, while Rochede Rose and Demario Knight scored penalties for Waterford .

Dethroned champions McCauley Primary placed third.
