Barbican continue dominance in women's football league

Barbican FC long-serving women's coach, Charles Edwards, says that he was not surprised by his team's big victory against Waterhouse FC in the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF)/Sports Development Foundation (SDF) mid-season final at Lime Tree Oval in St Catherine last Saturday.

The East St Andrew-based club hammered Waterhouse 5-0 to add another title to the long list they have won over a decade.

National striker Shantel Bailey netted a brace, while Kenesha Reid, Ashlee Sawyers and Rochelle Bryan added the other goals.

The champions were 4-0 up at the half-time break in what was clearly a one-sided affair, as the youthful Waterhouse team was no match for the more experienced Barbican outfit.

"I am not surprised by the team's dominance, especially in the first half. I saw the Waterhouse team during the first round and they are a young group," Edwards said.

"It is interesting as we are not usually so fluent in early season. We will get better as the season progresses," he said about his team that has not lost a game since 2011.

Michael Lowe, manager of Waterhouse, said although his team lost heavily in the final, he was proud of the youngsters.

"I am proud of the youngsters as we lost several players to other clubs during the summer transfer window. It is a learning curve for the players," Lowe said.

Barbican are guaranteed $120,000 winning incentive, while Waterhouse will collect $100,000.

The league will continue this Saturday with five games. The full fixture reads: Trelawny Women's vs Olympic Gardens FC, Barbican FC vs UWI FC, Waterhouse vs Central Lynx, Real MoBay vs St Ann Women's and Rangers vs G.C. Foster College FC. (All games start at 3:30 p.m.)
