St James, Cornwall wins set up massive weekend clash

Zone A leaders St James High and Cornwall College, yesterday distanced themselves from the pack as both recorded wins to see them remained locked on points  the 2017 ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup competition.

St. James High are, however, sitting at the summit as they edge the defending champions on goal deference after yesterday's round of matches.

The Theodore ‘Tappa’ Whitmore - coached St. James High were 3-0 winners over Maldon High at Jarret Park. St. James High went into the match with great confidence and as early as the 18th minute their confidence was converted to a goal off the boot of Jowell Powell, while Tyrique Clarke doubled their advantage thirty-five minutes into the game to round off a dominant half.

Clearly encouraged by their two-goal cushion, St James continued to dominate possession of the ball, stifling Maldon and not giving their opponents any real opportunities throughout the contest. Halfway through the second half, St James started moving the ball around with more pace and was again rewarded in the 72nd minute when substitute Kinani Clarke found the back of the net.

Cornwall College were also comfortable as they registered a 4-0 win over Irwin at the their home field.

Two goals from Aiden Jokomba, who was supported by Garnett Hudson and their leading goal scorer Shavon McDonald, saw them opening a six point gap between themselves and third placed Maldon.

Cornwall College and St. James will go head-to-head on Saturday when the battle each other at Jarret Park and St. James captain Cal-Wayne Allen has his eyes set on helping his team to all three points.

“Come Saturday we just have to go out there with our best, get the three points and we will be comfortable leading the zone,” said Allen.

Dinthill Tech extended their winning run the seven games with a 4-2 win over Ewarton High at Dinthill in their Zone K encounter, which was also played yesterday. This win now sees Dinthill comfortably qualifying for the inter zone round of the competition.

Bad weather conditions saw some twelve matches being postponed.
