#glnrCHAMPS: Williams, Salmon delight in 400m hurdles
Hydel High School’s Shiann Salmon and Rhodes Hall’s Rovane Williams both claimed records in their respective finals in the 400m hurdles at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Athletics Championships on Friday.
Salmon, running in the 400m hurdles Open for Girls, set a time of 55.78 seconds to erase the previous record of 55.81 set by Ristananna Tracey in 2011. Second place went to Vere Technical’s Sanique Walker who clocked 58.03 seconds while Edwin Allen’s Moisha Barnes’ time of 58.63 seconds placed her third.
Williams, in the Class 1 Boys 400m hurdles, removed Timor Barrett’s record set last year, with his time of 49.94 seconds. He finished ahead of Calabar’s Malik James-King, 50.03 seconds, and St Elizabeth Technical’s pre-race favourite Jauvauney James 50.07, who took second and third respectively.
There was a shock in the Class 2 event when Kingston College’s Shanthamoi Brown stumbled on a hurdle just after the start of his race, and fought back hard but could only place sixth. The race was won by Dean Clarke of Calabar High who clocked 52.67 seconds. Second was Excelsior’s Devontie Archer, in a time of 52.72 seconds, while third was taken by Calabar’s Andre Leslie, who finished in 52.90 seconds.
