Bucknor seek image change in Jamalco Open Netball
The Jamalco Open Netball League resumes tomorrow at the Mineral Heights Complex following a break for the Easter holidays.
One team looking to make their presence felt and bring joy to their community is the Bucknor-based team of Central Clarendon. Firstly, they have registered the team with a new name. They are now 'Prime', short for Prime Time Girls, which was among the mooted titles during their team discussion. This name change is significant to them, according to wing player Tania Hyman.
"We wanted to use another name to shift the focus from the image of the community," she told The Gleaner following their participation at the opening rally two weeks ago. Bucknor has long had a negative image in terms of crime in Clarendon, and even though there has been much improvement, the perception affects positive initiatives like netball.
A second change for them is their team colour. Traditionally, they play in green. They have now shifted this to yellow, which they believe gives a fresh look and perspective.
At present, most of what they achieve is the result of bonding together and doing things for themselves. For example, the coaching is done by team captain Tamoy Latty.
Hyman explains how they get equipment or get to matches.
"We don't have a sponsor, " she emphasises. "We use money from our pockets, and for those who can't afford it, we seek donations on the road."
She admits that while this is commendable, it is definitely not a sustainable method.
"We know that. We can't get any sponsors, so we do what we do on our own."
Until help comes, the plan is to motivate themselves to give of their best each time they step on to the court.
Mile Gully surge in Manchester Division One
Third-place Mile Gully whipped Comfort 4-0 in their own backyard to close the gap between front-running Alligator Pond and second-place Los Perfectos in the Mikael Phillips-sponsored Manchester Major League last weekend.
Mile Gully's win pushed them to 14 points and opened a six-point gap on fourth-place Comfort, but more important, reduced Los P's second-place lead to two points. Alligator Pond remain unbeaten and are in front on 22 points, after tagging Old England 4-0, while Lost Perfectos have 19 points after edging Technical Strikers 2-1.
Meanwhile, Comfort's latest setback opened the gate to being overtaken by fifth-place Villa, who are now one point behind on seven points with a game in hand. The rest of the teams have so far been disappointing, with Technical Strikers on two points and Old England on just a single point after six games.
Three semi-finalists confirmed in Confed Super League
Two St Elizabeth teams, Black Stars and St Bess, as well as Vere United of Clarendon, have clinched semi-final spots in the Charley's/JB Rum South Central Super League.
Black Stars finished first overall and top of preliminary-round Zone One after outscoring Old Harbour Bay FC 3-2. They ended on 35 points from 14 games after recording a season high of 11 wins, two draws and just one defeat. The team they lost to - Tru-Juice - will not be among the semi-final package.
Vere finished second and copped a place in their first season at this level. They ended their fixture with an 18-1 win over the already relegated Downs of FC. Old Harbour Bay were edged out by three points.
St Bess FC topped the second preliminary group despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Rivoli, who finished a disappointing fifth in the group. The final place is likely to be taken by Dunbeholden, who have an aborted game against York Town to continue. They lead that contest 5-0 after 35 minutes of first-half action. Dunbeholden actually sneaked into contention after denting the chances of Holland Police Youth Club (PYC) 2-0.
The rest of the results saw Sporting Central Academy FC trouncing Greenvale Academy 5-0, Real Treasure Beach FC getting the better of Moores FC of Clarendon 2-0, and York Town brushing aside Hillstars of Manchester 3-0.
Treadlight, Savannah Cross lead in Clarendon Major League
Treadlight and Morgans Pass continue to put daylight between themselves and their Zone One rivals in the Clarendon Major League, while Savannah hold a slim lead in a highly competitive Zone Two.
Treadlight are unbeaten after nine games, including three in the return phase, with 21 points compiled from six wins and three draws. Morgan's Pass have six wins also but have lost four in their ten games so far. Bucknor FC are in third place with 11 points from eight games.
Football Central are on 10 points, and Woodhall, nine. However, the latter lay dangerously perched with a mathematical chance of leapfrogging two of the teams ahead of them, as they have only played seven games. Their next encounter is against Bucknor today.
Zone Two seems destined for the wire; as many as four teams are still in with a chance of taking the two spots to the next phase. Savannah Cross have 18 points from nine games, followed by Longsville Park with 15 from nine. Young Strikers, who have played only seven games, are third on 13. New Bowens have 11 points. This zone sees action tomorrow with Young Strikers facing Comfort at Toll Gate.
Goshen lead St Elizabeth Major League
Following eight rounds, including one in the return legs, midseason champions Goshen are in front in the St Elizabeth Major League. Goshen, who defeated Super Action in the midseason final 1-0 just over a week ago, have 17 points. They are followed by Tafari Lions on 15 and third-place Super Action, who have 14.
In action from this week, Tafari Lions defeated New Holland 2-0 and Super Action and Ballaz FC from Northampton area drew 0-0, while Middle Quarters outscored Appleton 3-1. Goshen got full points and a three-goal scoreline from the boardroom as struggling Fullerswood failed to turn up for their away encounter.
The competition continues today with Goshen hosting New Holland while Tafari Lions host Super Action at the Lacovia Sports Complex. Tomorrow, Appleton will play Fullerswood at Arlington, and Ballaz FC face New Holland at Lyco.
