Chin NCB Junior Sporting Clays champ
Sub-Junior A champion Nathan Chin, upstaged his more fancied opponents to win the National Commercial Bank Capital Market National Junior Sporting Clays overall individual title at the Jamaica Skeet Club yesterday.
The Campion College student shot 93 of 100 birds to top his section and advance to the super six shoot-off with more experienced shooters, such as 17-20 age group winner and runner up, Zachary Chen (95) and Peter Mahfood (93), respectively Junior A champion, Roman Tavares-Finson (94), and Junior B winner and second -place Toby Hugh (91), and Amir Azan (90), respectively.
At the final of the three shoot off stations, the underdog shot a perfect eight from eight targets to end on 111, the same as Chen, forcing another shoot off, which he then won 6-5, to win the title 117 to 116.
Chin, who revealed that he had no practice leading up to the tournament, said he felt no pressure despite coming against more seasoned campaigners. "I have been in the super six already, so it wasn't that much pressure as last time. It wasn't that bad. I just did what I always do, try my best and focus hard," he said.
Copping the national junior title was also the first major accomplishment for the young shooter, who was somewhat unfazed despite upsetting his more senior and more successful compatriots. "I feel good that I won the super six and everything. It is the biggest achievement for me in a long while," Chin said.
