Former champions St James High marched into the second round of the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup competition following a 3-1 win over Green Pond High at Jarrett Park yesterday.

Ryan Walker (3rd), Kimani Clarke (52nd) and Kyldon Crewe (78th) were the goalscorers for St. James High. Substitute Javaughn Pinnock (78th) got the consolation  goal for Green Pond.

Garfield Anderson, coach of St James High, is impressed with the improvement his team has shown and is looking forward to the seeded second round of the competition.

“First and foremost we want to give thanks to the almighty for progressing beyond the preliminary and into the second round. These guys are just youngsters so we are not putting too much pressure on them. They have grown tremendously as a group and have improved as we go along the way,” said Anderson.

“We haven’t lost a game in the return legs. This shows a level of consistency. The belief and confidence are there so anything is possible. We know we are no title contenders and are not under any illusions whatsoever but we are going to put our best foot forward. Where ever it takes us we will enjoy the journey while it lasts,” he added.

Anderson is aware that finishing second in the group will see them not getting a favourable placing on the seeding chart. He, however, said they are looking beyond the second round and are ready to face all challenges.

“We relish any challenge that comes along the way. This is a competitive daCosta Cup competition as you can see we came out of a very competitive group. Whoever our opponents might be we will show respect but will show no fear. We will apply ourselves, ensure we play good football and the results will come,” said Anderson.
