Powell back at MBU
Relegation battlers Montego Bay United made it clear on Sunday evening that they will leave no stone unturned in their fight to remain in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL), with their latest effort being the return of former club president and owner Orville Powell.
Powell’s decision to return to the club he piloted to two RSPL titles was made on Sunday evening after witnessing the team in action for the first time in their 3-2 home loss to fellow relegation battlers Dunbeholden FC at WesPow Park. Prior to the start of the season, Powell walked away from the club, allowing Dr Jerome Spencer to take charge.
“Yes, I have decided to step back in and help with the club,” Powell confirmed withThe Gleaner yesterday.
‘While I have said that I am back now, let me make it clear that this does not mean that I will be there next year. I am stating clearly that I have agreed to help now, and that is that.”
Powell, a man who was often at odds with the Premier League Clubs Association, said it was not the first time that his assistance was sought, but he decided to stay true to his decision of dissociating himself from the club.
Heart softened
Having witnessed a fraction of one match, though, Powell’s heart softened and he decided to support them.
“When I saw them, I was convinced that they needed the help, and if I am in a position to, then why not?” Powell said.
“At this time, the club is at the bottom of the table with 19 points, four behind Dunbeholden, Reno are a little way ahead of us, and so are Harbour View, and both of them are within reach. We have what it takes to catch them and surpass them, but we have improvements to do in the area of coaching,” Powell explained.
Already, Powell said he had reached out to a coach who was unable to take up the offer. That search, he said, will continue and a decision will be made in short order.
