Reggae Girlz Lapathon runs off today
Carole Beckford, chairperson of the Jamaica Reggae Girlz Special Projects team, is urging Jamaicans to come out and support today’s Lapathon event, which is aimed at raising funds for the team on its journey to France for the FIFA Women’s World Cup next month.
The event will be held at Jamaica College at 6 a.m. with an entry cost of $1,500, which includes breakfast.
Beckford told The Gleaner that the event is extremely important for the Reggae Girlz because the funds will go towards providing basic items while they are in France.
“One of the things is that we want them to have as close to a Jamaican experience as possible,” she said.
“So the funds will go directly to acquiring items for the ladies, like a care pack. So when they wake up in the mornings, they will have Jamaican food items that are non-perishable, and whatever else they may need while they are in France.”
She added that the Girlz are looking forward to the event, and persons should come out and make whatever donations they can to assist.
“The Lapathon is for people to come out on Saturday morning, because if we get a thousand people, then it will mean that we will raise close to a million dollars,” Beckford said.
“The Girlz will make a brief stop to say thanks to the people who participated in the event,” she noted.
