Waterhouse defeat Herediano in Costa Rica, advance to Concacaf League quarter-finals
Red Stripe Premier League runners-up Waterhouse are through to the quarter-finals of the Scotiabank Concacaf League, after a dramatic penalty shoot-out win away to Costa Rican outfit Herediano at the Eladio Rosabal Cordero on Thursday night.
Waterhouse defeated Herediano 7-6 on penalties, after both teams played out a 1-1 draw, matching the result from last week's first leg at the National Stadium.
Goal-keeper Akeem Chambers, who was voted 'Man-of-the-Match', was crucial for the Jamaican team, making a stop in the penalty shoot-out before converting the winning kick, so send his team through to the last eight of the competition.
"First of all I have to give thanks to God and praises to the coaches. We came her for this and they prepared us well. We came here with just one aim on our mind, and we did it for our fans. I want to big up Jamaica and my whole family," said Murray.
The hosts got of to a great start, when Yeltsin Tejeda opened the scoring in the second minute of play, after latching on to a well-placed pass from Francisco Rodriguez.
However, Waterhouse striker Colorado Murray, who had promised to make up for his underwhelming performance in the first leg, pulled the Jamaicans level in the 28th minute with a thunderous right-footed strike.
The locals dominated much of the possession and opportunities afterwards, but Chambers proved a problem for them in the Waterhouse goal, making several critical saves.
The goalie would continue his torment of the Herediano players in the shootout, making a save on Ariel Soto's effort, which would have won the shoot-out for Herediano, before converting his own penalty kick, which was followed by a miss from Herediano's goal-keeper Esteban Alvarado.
Keithy Simpson, Nicholy Finlayson, Damion Binns, Stephen Williams, Mark Miller, Shawn Lawes and Chambers all converted their kicks for Waterhouse, while Tramaine Stewart and Murray both missed theirs.
Waterhouse head coach Marcel Gayle welcomed the result.
"We left here as gladiators. We knew it would be a hard game, but we stuck it out and fought until the end. They really pushed us, but we kept focus and discipline and we are grateful for the victory," said Gayle.
Waterhouse will next face Motogua from Honduras, in the quarter-finals of the competition.
