DOHA, Qatar:

Disappointed from his fifth place finish in the men's 100 metres final at the 2019 World Championships in Doha on Saturday, Yohan Blake said he will be dropping the 200m event next season, in order to focus on the shorter sprint event.

Blake is actually set to begin his 200m campaign on Sunday at 8:05 p.m. inside the Khalifa International Stadium, but the Olympic silver medal winner and second fastest man ever in the event, said it is unlikely that he will return to the half-lap event next season.

"I just have to work better in training and focus on the 100m only next year and take it from there," Blake told The Gleaner shortly after running fifth in the 100m in a time of 9.97 seconds.

The event was won by American Christian Coleman in 9.76 ahead of teammate Justin Gatlin, 9.89 and Andre De Grasse, 9.90, in third.

Blake, whose 19.26 seconds is only bettered by Usain Bolt's 19.19 time in the 200m, admitted that it will not be easy to walk away from the event, but believes it's the best thing for him at this stage of his career.

"I think so, it’s a lot of work (doing both events), there is a lot of training. It's emotional knowing that I am the second fastest man of all time (in the 200m), but sometimes you have to let go off one and focus on the other," said Blake.

Blake won silver at the 2012 London Olympic Games in the 200m.
