Wolmer's rout Jose Marti 6-0
Wolmer's used a second half surge to put away Jose Marti 6-0 in their Group E ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup encounter at the Jose Marti school grounds on Friday afternoon.
The Maroons maintained their second place position with 23 points, two behind group leaders Jamaica College who they will face in their rescheduled game from September 16.
Shaquane Whyte opening the scoring in the 16th minute, finishing brilliantly in the penalty area when Jose Marti failed to clear their lines. Whyte had the opportunity to double their advantage minutes later when Orlando Russell's cross from the left hand side found Whyte, but was unable to tap it in from close range.
The second half started with more of the same with Wolmer's looking for the second goal. In minute 51, Russell latched on to an excellent pass and fired a low shot that Jose Marti goalkeeper Gavin Messam could not keep out. The dam broke after that as the goals kept coming. Rivaldo Mitchell scored a brace in the 63rd and 66th minutes to stretch the lead to 4-0. Renaldo Webster got on the scoresheet himself in the 75th minute with a brilliant one-time effort in the penalty area and wrapped up the victory thanks to a header nine minutes from full time.
Jose Marti were on the defensive the entire game and were unable to generate many opportunities for themselves. Jose Marti coach Patrick Lewis criticized his team's performance.
"My team was lackadaisical in terms of winning first and second balls," he said after the game. "They were just not fast on the ball today and that cost us the game."
Wolmer's assistant coach Irvino English was pleased with the team's performance although it took a while for his players to get settled into the contest.
"The team performed well. I think we executed well today," English said. "We started off slowly just like the game against Tarrant the other day, but we picked it up eventually and got five goals in the second half."
