The Caymanas Golf Club in St Catherine will host the inaugural Rose Cup golf tournament on December 29 and 30.

The Ryder Cup-style team-play tournament will feature Jamaica’s top professional golf players going up against their amateur counterparts over the two days to decide who gets a hold on the first-ever Rose Cup.

The tournament, named after one of Jamaica’s outstanding golfers, Seymour Rose, will see the five two-man teams battling four balls and alternate shots on Tuesday, December 29, and match-play for all members on Wednesday, December 30. A maximum of 22 points will be up for grabs, with the winners needing to score 11 and a half points or higher.

Amateur team captain Sean Morris expects a fierce yet friendly rivalry, as he and his peers are out to get the better of their professional counterparts.

HUNGRY AMATEUR TEAM

“The amateur team is packing a lot of talent and I believe that the guys are in good shape,” Morris said. “They are hungry because they did not have the Caribbean Championship to play this year, so they are looking forward to this event as the marquee event on their calendar.”

Sean Green, a professional, says there are bragging rights to play for, and his team will be going all out to prove their worth.

“I expect it to be a fun-filled competition,” Green said. “The Rose Cup is similar to a Ryder Cup format, which I don’t think we have ever had in Jamaica, so it’s exciting to see our elite golfers playing together.”

Sheree Rose is delighted that the golfing fraternity can recognise her father’s contribution to the sport, in this gesture.

“I am very happy,” she said. “He has left quite a legacy and I feel thrilled. “It is amazing to know that even in death he is still remembered, because in life, he touched so many.”
