Burrowes tops the field at golf trials
Justin Burrowes’ imperious form continued, as the national amateur champion secured top spot following the 54-hole Jamaica Golf Association national trials, which were played at the Cinnamon Hill and Caymanas golf courses on Sunday.
The diminutive Burrowes carded an even-par final round to finish with a four-day even-par total of 288, to beat nearest rival William Knibbs by three strokes.
Burrowes and Knibbs had the only under-par rounds of the championship, with Burrowes carding a four-under-par 68 in the third round, while Knibbs had red numbers of 71 in the opening round and 70 in the third round.
The pair will be leading the charge for Jamaica at the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championship, which is slated for Puerto Rico, August 8-13.
Also expected to make the trip to Puerto Rico to compete in the Hoerman Cup are Dr Mark Newnham, Rocco Lopez and Shamar Wilson, who finished in the top five positions at the trials.
Newnham carded a four-round 13 over par total of 301, while Lopez was 16 shots over par and Wilson 17 over par.
For Burrowes, his consistent play is paying off, and he is thankful that he can continue to chalk up the wins ahead of the Caribbean Championships.
“I didn’t quite finish as well as I would have wanted but a win is a win and I am grateful for it. I must thank my entire team around me for all the support as it is an amazing feeling when you can execute and come out on top,” said Burrowes.
Meanwhile, Emily Mayne came out on top in the ladies zero to 12 category following a 28 over par 316.
Mayne, who shot 80, 79 and 80 in rounds one to three, had her best round of 77 in the final round.
“I had a very good start compared to the first two days which I started badly. I kept it consistent and I am proud of myself for my finish,” said Mayne.
Veteran Jodi Munn-Barrow, despite completing only three rounds, is expected to be a part of the George Teale ladies team along with Mattea Issa, who carded a 70 over par 358.
