The frailties of the West Indies women batting line-up without skipper Stafanie Taylor was on show yesterday as the regional side went down by 50 runs to South Africa in their second Twenty20 (T20) International in Antigua.

The home side, chasing 166 for victory, could only manage 115 for eight, with a couple of the Windies batswomen getting starts but not able to take the team over the line.

The regional side lost wickets at regular intervals as Jamaican Chedean Nation and Britney Cooper top-scored with 26 apiece, with opener Deandra Dottin getting 19.

Marizanne Kapp was the pick of the bowlers for the South Africans, claiming three wickets for 31 runs while there were two wickets each for Ayabonga Khaka and Nonkululeko Mlaba.

Earlier, the South Africans’ total of 165 for three was built up around a magnificent 75 from opener Lizelle Lee, who smashed 12 fours and one six in her 52-ball knock.

33 FROM NINE BALLS

Laura Wolvaardt chipped in with 33 from just nine balls with one four and four sixes. Off-spinner Hayley Matthews picked up two expensive wickets for 43 runs in three overs while there was a wicket for Qiana Joseph.

Shakera Salman, who went wicketless in her three overs after conceding 27 runs, says the regional side let the game slip towards the back end of the South African innings.

“I think we were in control of the game even though they didn’t lose a lot of wickets,” Salman said. “We probably went wrong in the death overs, where we went for a few runs. I thought that it was a pretty good pitch for us to chase those runs.”

With the opening T20 abandoned because of bad weather, the West Indies must now win the third T20 match tomorrow if they are to square the series at a game apiece.

“We hate to lose any series, especially at home, and we are going to try our best and draw the series, but we have to go all out in this last T20,” Salman said.
