Sunil Narine (centre) and Colin Munro (left) of Trinbago Knight Riders celebrate the dismissal of Jamaica Tallawahs captain Rovman Powell during their Hero Caribbean Premier League match at Warner Park Sporting Complex in Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis, yesterday.

The Jamaica Tallawahs’ batting was put under scrutiny once again as the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) opening bowlers did the damage to help set up a seven-wicket win in the Hero Caribbean Premier League in Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis, yesterday.

The Tallawahs, who were asked to take the first strike, were restricted to 144 for seven, after which TKR moved to 145 for three in 17 overs and a delivery to seal the win.

The Tallawahs were in trouble early as seamer Ravi Rampaul and left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein, had them at 15 for five in the sixth over.

It took an 83-run sixth-wicket stand between Pakistani all-rounder Imad Wasim, who was playing his first game, and Carlos Brathwaite to bring some respectability to the Tallawahs score.

Brathwaite top scored with 58 from 40 balls with seven fours and two sixes while Wasim weighed in with 42 from 38 balls with three fours and two sixes.

QUICKFIRE

Andre Russell also showed his power-hitting capabilities, slamming a quickfire unbeaten 20 from eight balls with one four and two sixes.

Hosein, who opened the bowling, finished with two wickets for 12 runs while Rampaul also had two wickets which went for 26 runs.

TKR made little fuss in getting the runs, with opener Lendl Simmons striking his way back to form with 70 from 45 balls with five fours and five sixes. New Zealand left-hander Colin Munro chipped in with 34 as he and Simmons put on 102 runs for the second wicket.

Wasim ended with two wickets for 19 runs for the Tallawahs, who now drop to fifth in the standings on four points with two wins and three losses.

Captain Rovman Powell, who failed to trouble the score in the encounter, says his team paid the price for some poor shot selections.

“I didn’t think that wicket was a 15-for-five wicket,” he said. “I thought Trinidad bowled well ,and we played some bad shots in the power play, and I think that brought our downfall.”

The Tallawahs let themselves down in the field with several catches going begging, and Powell says the team must get that aspect of their game right if they are to make it to the playoffs.

“Every single game we drop catches, and guys go on to score runs,” he said. “It is something that is plaguing us, not just this year, but last year also, and it is something we have to get right.”

The Tallawahs will get a chance at redemption tomorrow when they meet TKR again in the morning game at 9 a.m. Jamaica time.
