Discus delight at G.C. Foster
Throwers stood tallest at last Saturday’s Development meet at the G.C. Foster College for Physical Education and Sport, with Edwin Allen High School showing good form in boys and girls discus action. Christopher Young and Trevor Gunzell swapped places in Class One, with Damali Williams setting a personal best with the Class One discus for girls. On the track, Gianni Henry of Kingston College shone brightest with a big double.
Young, a former discus winner at Boys and Girls’ Championships, launched his shot 20.30 metres to outdo Gunzell, 19.11, but his training partner took the discus, 61.49m to 61.41m. Both marks are qualifiers for the World Under-20 Championships later this year.
In the Class One discus, Damali Williams, also of Edwin Allen, was triumphant with a personal best throw of 48.51 metres. That is one centimetre over the World Under-20 qualifying standard.
“It’s my second time throwing the discus this season, so it’s a great feeling to know I came out here and had a personal best,” said the Edwin Allen sixth-former. Her teammate, Shamoyea Morris, won in Class Two, with a distance of 37.10 metres.
Rehanna Biggs of St Jago stopped the Edwin Allen discus domination with a 40.55m to 40.31m win over Dejona Shaw in Class Three. In the shot put, St Jago’s Jamora Alves won in Class One at 14.25 metres, with Nastassia Burrell of Hydel High on top in Class Two with a winning effort of 13.52m.
On the track, Henry set the fastest time overall in the Class One 800m, clocking one minute 53.10 seconds and six minutes 16.38 seconds in the 2000 metres steeplechase. In his section of the 800m, he peeled away from Adrian Nethersole of St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS), 1.54.55.
Also working on the double were the Edwin Allen pair of Serena Cole and Rushana Dwyer. In a rare moment when the GC Foster wind was still, Cole sped away in the Class One 200m to win in 24.09 seconds and came back later to win the long jump with a leap measuring 5.86 metres. Dwyer led from post to post in the Class One 800m to win in two minutes 10.06 seconds and returned later to win the 1500 metres. As usual, she cruised the penultimate lap in 83.9 seconds before hitting the gas in the last circuit - 71.3 seconds - to cross the finish line in 4.47.84 with teammate Jessica McLean close at 4.48.14.
With Edwin Allen leaving their batons at home, the best 4x100m performance came from Wolmer’s Girls in Class Two at 48.64 seconds, with hurdler Tiana Marshall running a fast second leg.
In the Boys’ 4x100m races, Herbert Morrison High won in Class 1, 41.90 seconds, and Class 3, 46.73. STETHS, winners at Boys and Girls’ Championships in Class Three last year, were in front in the Class Two event in 44.09 seconds.
