Reggae Girl Shaw seals City’s Cup win
LONDON (CMC):
Jamaican Khadija Shaw rounded out the scoring as Manchester City netted four second-half goals after fighting back to beat Manchester United 4-1 yesterday and reach the English Women’s FA Cup quarter-finals.
Three goals in 10 minutes from Lauren Hemp, Ellen White and Caroline Weir put City ahead, after Katie Zelem scored directly from a corner before the break to give the hosts a deserved lead.
Reggae Girl Shaw, 25, added the fourth for City after 79 minutes with her first touch just seconds after coming off the bench, blasting the ball into the roof of the net from two yards after goalkeeper Mary Earps parried Julie Blakstad’s shot into the path of the Jamaican.
City’s Manchester derby victory was their second against United in two weeks, having beaten the Red Devils 1-0 in the Women’s Super League to move within two points of their neighbours in fourth.
Michail Antonio’s goalless run for English Premier League side West Ham United extended to eight games, but the 31-year-old Reggae Boy proved a handful as the Hammers edged Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 at the London Stadium.
Antonio made a vital contribution in teeing up Czech Republic international Tomas Soucek, who poked home the winner on his 27th birthday, and may have had a goal of his own had he chosen to shoot instead of picking out a teammate after escaping down the left.
Asked afterwards about Antonio, who had “worked his socks off” before tiring in the closing stages and being substituted in stoppage time, manager David Moyes told an interviewer: “He was really good for us today.
“He created chances for the team, and the keeper made a good save from him in the first half.
“He was done in the final 15 minutes, but he’s done a good job for us today.”
The result moved West Ham up to fifth in the table, above Arsenal on goal difference and two points behind Manchester United in fourth, but the Gunners have three games in hand on both.
Another Reggae Boy, Kemar Roofe, who has scored 11 goals for defending Scottish Premiership champions Rangers and one for Jamaica this season, came on as an 83rd-minute substitute, but failed to find a winner as Rangers blew a two-goal lead in a 2-2 home draw against Motherwell and failed to narrow the gap on leaders Celtic, who drew 0-0 at Hibernian.
