West Indies women demolished at the hands of India
The reality of the work still to be done at this year’s ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup for the West Indies was made evident earlier today when India, through a punishing display, pushed them out of the top four positions on the competition’s table.
India, after choosing to bat, went on to win the game by a mammoth 155 runs, thanks to centuries from opener Smriti Mandhana (123), and Harmanpreet Kaur (109).
Those centuries, both done at better than a run a ball, left India to defend 317. In reply, the West Indies were routed for just 169.
Smriti’s 123 came off 119 deliveries from which she smacked 13 fours and two sixes, while Harmanpreet got to 109 in 107 deliveries, blasting 10 fours and two sixes on her way to the total.
The two were giving India their second win in three games, doing so against the bowling of Anisa Mohammed 2-59. There was also a wicket apiece for Shamilia Connell (1-57),Haye Matthews (1-65), Shakera Selman (1-41), Deandra Dottin (1-32), and Aaliyah Alleyne (1-26).
When the West Indies replied, Sneh Rana’s 3-22, and Meghna Singh’s 2-27 wrecked the innings. Jhulan Goswami, 1-43 from six overs, came in for some stick as was the case for Pooja Vastrakar 1-21 from just two overs, but Rajeshwari Gyakwad, 1-24 from 10 overs, was miserly.
The West Indies women started well enough, losing their first wicket with the score on 100, as Dottin, 62 from 46 deliveries and Matthews, 43 from 36, put India to the sword.
But once Dottin got out in over number 13, things fell away dramatically.
Kycia Knight was next to fall with the score on 108 for two, and the West Indies Women were in some trouble.
The runs had dried up and when Stafanie Taylor fell for one in the 18th over, the scoreboard had inched along to just 112. Two runs later Matthews, who had been kept off the strike, was gone. The game was all but over at that point and the West Indies limped to 162 all out in 40.3 overs.
The West Indies women will next face Australia women on Monday beginning at 5 p.m., Jamaica time.
