Carifta Trials |Campbell wins fast 400m hurdles, Hinds holds off big challenge

Kingston College's (KC) Rayon Campbell was pushed all the way as he came up with the goods in the JAAA Carifta Trials boys' under-20 400 metres inside the National Stadium on Sunday.

Campbell stopped the clock at at 49.52 seconds to get the better of Camperdown High School's Roshawn Clarke, who pushed him with 49.85.

The two finished well ahead of KC's Antonio Forbes, 50.48, and Excelsior High School's Jahmani Smith, 51.49.

St Elizabeth Technical High School's (STETHS) Shamer Blake, 52.97, Petersfield High's Romario Stewart, 53.47, and Calabar's Javel Fullerton, 54.34 complete the placings in the final.

St Jago High School's Safhia Hinds turned back Hydel High School's Oneika McAnuff to claim the girls' under-20 400 hurdles title, winning in 58.06.

McAnuff clocked 59.35 for her second place finish, ahead of STETHS' Shackelia Green, 59.77.

Tonyan Beckford from Edwin Allen was fourth in 1:00.50, with Excelsior's Dejona Simpson, 1:00.73, Vere Technical's Deneka Thomas, 1:04.02, and St Jago's Quacian Davis, 1:06.10, rounding out the field.

Spot Valley High School's Deandra Harris claimed the under-17 girls' 400-metre hurdles, dismantling the chasing pack to clock 1:01.78.

Edwin Allen High School's Kelly Ann Carr led that chasing pack, finishing in 1:05.22, just ahead of Olivia St John, 1:05.30 and Rhodes Hall's Rhianna Lewis, 1:05.52.

The field was completed by STETHS' Chennai Jarrett, 1:06.73, and the Alpha pair of Amoi Kentish, 1:09.11, and Halyncia Henry, 1:11.26.

In the boys' under-17 event, KC's Jordan Mowatt, the only athlete to dip below 53 seconds, won in 52.53.

Jamaica College's Martin Princewell was second in 53.01, well ahead of the rest of the pack, with Excelsior High School's Daniel Wright well back in 54.77.

KC's Jordan Taylor, 55.51, JC's DeAndre Gayle, 56.82, and Rhodes Hall's Barrian Authurs, 58.09, rounded out the field.
