Super Six match to blaze JRA
With more than 80 shooters registered , the Super Six Carry Guns Nationals has already shattered the number of participants in matches at the Jamaica Rifle Association (JRA) over the past five years. This Carry Guns Nationals, which begins at 10 a.m. today, will be a treat.
With stages designed to capture real-life scenarios on the streets and world-class shooters swapping high capacity and feather-trigger race guns for their everyday carry guns, excitement is expected to reach fever pitch.
To add more fun to the event, a number of teams have entered and shooters have come together and formed teams of six among themselves. These include Team Construction, Ardenne Old Boys, Domino Players, Rifle shooters, Jamaica Customs and Department of Correctional Services.
Dennis Titus, Dwight Bancey and Thomas Hall, some of the very few shooters at the club who shoot their carry guns in regular competition, are threatening to put the more accomplished shooters to the test. However, the dangerous Darin Richards, Owen Campbell and Ryan Brammwell have other ideas.
Richards, who it is said shoots his carry gun with similar aplomb to his competition gun, will have Bramwell, Sanjay Welsh and Chris Hart for company in a very formidable-looking Construction team.
Club President Major John Nelson, one of the most accurate shooters at the club, will need a very competitive rifle team which will include medical doctor Derek Mitchell, Sean Pierre, Alex Clarke and national champion Captain Dwayne Ford.
Another team that cannot be overlooked is Domino Players, who have in their ranks the impressive Michael Wilkinson, Master Class Shooter Andrew Yap, and Adrian Randle. Bad Bwoyz with the nimble Michael Bradshaw, Owen Campbell, Els Dixon and Mohan Pai, are hell-bent on walking way with the top prize.
The most excitement, however, should be around the all-female squad which will include the elite Super Six shooters. Florence Golding from Western Jamaica and Jody Gayle should also feature in that squad where the shooting talent of Jamaica’s best women pistol shooters will be on show.
Match director Robin Rickhi expects a very competitive match. According to him, the bantering which started two months ago will end at 10 o’clock this morning when the first shot is fired down range to indicate the end of talking and bringing action into play.
Detective Corporal Sasha Mullings, captain of the Super Six team, has called on pectators to turn out for this unique event. “Our team has been working for months to have this event which will give our shooters the opportunity to do something different. Now, it is time for action”, she said.
The all-female shooting team, which was formed last October to participate in the Jamaica Constabulary Force SWAT Round-up, has been selected to represent Jamaica at the Pan Am Shooting Championships and is using this match to raise much-needed funds.
