Lawrence now in charge at St Jago High
Former Molynes United coach, Garnet Lawrence, will, starting next Manning Cup season, replace Jerome Waite as coach at St Jago High School.
Lawrence, who is also a former head coach at Bridgeport High School, was officially appointed yesterday and has a contract that runs to 2025.
“It is a real good opportunity and I am elated about it, knowing that St Jago have been getting better over the past few years and have employed some very good coaches. So the players should be at a really good level and I am hoping to do well. All the stakeholders have been pleased with my progress as a coach and I am looking for good things,” Lawrence said.
“We want our kids to know that all teams are beatable. We also want to do well every year and if you put that in the players’ minds they will get it within the year or over the three years,” he added.
Lawrence said he has received great support so far from coaching staff and the support staff at St Jago adding that “once we can strike that balance we will do well”.
St Jago will play in Manning Cup Group B along with Jamaica College, St Catherine High, Meadowbrook High, Cedar Grove Academy and St Mary’s College and although Lawrence is wary of his opponents, he expects at least a second-round berth in his first season with the Spanish Town-based school.
“Our group is a very tough one. You have teams that can do damage, but we think we will get out of the zone.
“Last year they almost made the second round and considering that we will have most of those players we expect to be ultra competitive. We will also try to bring in some good players to enhance the team and try to hit the ground running,” he said.
Previous coach, Waite, left for Wolmer’s Boys’ School last month.
