Selassie oust Excelsior with 1-1 draw
Underdogs Haile Selassie claimed a major scalp in the ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup schoolboy football competition at Stadium East today, as they battled to a second-leg 1-1 draw to oust Excelsior High 2-1 on aggregate.
Haile Selassie won the first-leg 1-0, but Excelsior sent their supporters into a frenzy after Richard Andrews scored a scorcher in the 43rd minute to level the tie 1-1. Joshua Dewar, however, turned their roars into a whimper in the 47th minute when he equalised for Haile Selassie.
The result catapulted Haile Selassie into the next phase on their return to the competition after a two-year hiatus and eliminated the seven-time champions, Excelsior.
Andrews, with Excelsior kicking towards the hills, provided hope when he picked up a ball midway Haile Selassie’s half of the pitch and fired thunderously out of the reach of Haile Selassie’s goalkeeper Kevin Hibbert.
Dewar nullified that effort when he calmly slot into an unprotected goal after a rebound rolled generously for him. The Haile Selassie hero found himself unmarked inside the penalty area with goalkeeper Jadavin Waul out of position after a shot hit the base of the upright.
