Manning’s, Glenmuir closer to quarters despite stalemate
THE MANNING’S and Glenmuir High schools are just a point away from booking their place in the quarterfinals of the ISSA daCosta Cup following their nil-all draw in a Group Four fixture at Glenmuir High yesterday.
Both teams will enter Saturday’s final set of group matches with identical records of one win and a draw with a goal difference of plus two.
Glenmuir are set to face Edwin Allen in a Clarendon derby, while Manning’s will host St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS).
STETHS and Edwin Allen played to a one-all draw in their encounter at St Elizabeth Technical High School yesterday, leaving both on a point from two games.
In the meantime, both coaches of Glenmuir and Manning’s were buoyed by the point, especially with the knowledge that they are now within touching distance of making it into the final eight.
“The encounter saw two very good teams, and I thought we displayed more quality on the ball, however, the quality of chances was not matching the build-up play to get into the final third, so all in all, a fair result,” said Glenmuir coach Andrew Peart.
“I am pleased, but I was expecting more from this game,” said Everton Tomlinson, coach of Manning’s.
“I thought we had the opportunities, especially in the first half, but the end result is that we didn’t lose, and under the circumstances, it is commendable.”
In a contest where defences were the standouts, Manning’s looked the more comfortable team when advancing, however, some good handling from goalkeeper Mickayle Williams from the barrage of longballs from both flanks kept the scoresheet clean in the first stanza.
In the second half, Manning’s must have felt that they would have gone one-nil up when Devonte Rodney latched on to a through ball, but he put his effort wide of the advancing Williams.
Williams was at his brilliant best once again deep in the second half as he denied top marksman Jhamaleek Porter from close range.
Player of the match, Williams also denied what clearly would have been the winner in stoppage time when he parried a fierce right-footed drive from just outside of the area from Abeena Wallace.
