MEMBER OF Parliament for North West St Ann, Krystal Lee, with the assistance of Sport Minister Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange, officially opened a multipurpose court in Discovery Bay on Friday, constructed at a cost of over $3 million.

Located at the Discovery Bay Community Centre, the facility was completed last year, and hosted several games prior to its official opening last week.

“This facility was built through the Tourism Product Development Company’s (TPDCo) Spruce Up funds that are made available to members of parliament to use in their constituencies,” Lee disclosed.

“It was a well-needed initiative, a well-needed project. As a matter of fact, they started using it before our opening today. We had the SDC National 4IN1 competition finals being held here (January 22) and, if this court was not built, then, of course, that would not have been possible. And we have several community teams for netball, basketball, they’ve started training as well.”

Lee said, with the court now available for use, she would be seeking to develop the sport of volleyball in the community.

She said there were plans in the pipeline for a number of years but she was happy that she was able to make the commitment and eventually achieve the goal in her second year as MP.

Lee disclosed that, in addition to the $3M from TPDCo to build the court, an additional $1.4M was donated by the Sports Development Foundation (SDF) to construct the fencing around the facility.

“We’re very thankful to the SDF, TPDCo and the minister (Grange),” said Lee.

Grange hailed the work that Lee has been doing in the constituency since becoming MP.

American actor, John Amos, was special guest at the ceremony.

A similar multipurpose court was also unveiled at Addison Park in Brown’s Town later that afternoon.
