Former world 100m champion Tori Bowie has died at the age of 32.

The American athlete's death was confirmed by her management company, Icon Management Inc on Wednesday.

No cause of death has yet been stated.

“We're devastated to share the very sad news that Tori Bowie has passed away. We've lost a client, dear friend, daughter and sister," the statement read.

"Tori was a champion…a beacon of light that shined so bright! We're truly heartbroken and our prayers are with the family and friends," it continued.

Bowie was a three time Olympic medallist, with all her medals won at the 2016 Rio Games, where she captured silver in the 100m, bronze in the 200m and gold in the 4x100m relays.

She won the world 100m title the following year at the 2017 World Athletics Championships in London, becoming the first American woman since Carmelita Jeter in 2011 to win a major global title.

Bowie's final race was at the Star Athletics Sprint Series meet last June.
