Jamaica’s under-15 football team, now preparing for the Concacaf Championships in the Dominican Republic from August 6-15, will compete in a mini tournament in the eastern Caribbean before going into the championship.
The young Reggae Boyz were forced to miss a preparation tournament in Sweden a few weeks ago because of late visa applications, and Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) General Secretary Dennis Chung promised that the federation would find quality opponents of similar standard for the youngsters before the regional championship.
Chung told The Gleaner they are still finalising their participation in the tournament and he could not reveal the full details as yet. However, The Gleaner understands that the young Reggae Boyz will participate in a mini tournament in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T).
A STOP BEFORE TOURNAMENT
“We have organised for them to make a stop before they go to the tournament in August. I cannot say exactly where it is right now but we are organising for them to make that stop before they go down,” Chung said.
“They have some work to do here in camp before their departure but we will have things in place for them,” he insisted.
Meanwhile, Director of Football, Wendell Downswell, said the team will return to camp to resume preparation this weekend.
“The under-14 girls have their competition coming up as well and they are starting this weekend. The girls will be at the UWI-JFF Captain Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence and the boys could be in St Ann at Mount Pleasant or somewhere in St Elizabeth but we are definitely exploring the options.
“The mini tournament will provide invaluable experience for the youngsters. It will not be similar to the one we missed out on but at least they will get some level of preparation going forward,” Downswell said.
The Concacaf Under-15 Championships is divided into three leagues (A, B, and C). Jamaica will compete in League A, where they will match up against Mexico, El Salvador and guest team Saudi Arabia.
The tournament will be held in Willemstad, Curaçao, and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Forty teams from Concacaf and two guest nations from the Asian Football Confederation, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, are set to compete in the tournament
All League A matches will be played in Santo Domingo, while all League B and League C matches will be played in Willemstad, Curaçao.
