Greenwood move to Getafe under scrutiny
AP:GETAFE IS being scrutinised for having acquired forward Mason Greenwood on loan from Manchester United after the English player left his old club following a criminal investigation into a possible attempted rape that was closed by prosecutors.
The deal was announced just before the summer market closed on Friday. The 21-year-old England forward has not played for United since January 2022.
Getafe coach José Bordalás said in a news conference after his side lost to Real Madrid and another English import, Jude Bellingham, who was scoring his fifth goal in four games in the 2-1 win for the home team, that the situation was delicate and that he only wanted to discuss the football.
“It is a very delicate situation that is not to be made light of. … Everyone knows what happened and the measures that were taken. We can only talk about soccer. He is motivated to be here and we will help him recover his best level,” said Bordalás.
Greenwood’s move to Spain has come at a time when the government is attempting to oust the head of its football federation for a seemingly forced kiss after the women had won the Women’s World Cup.
The move has also come at a time when Spanish players have threatened to go on strike until they have the promise of improved pay and conditions for women.
