Shericka Jackson misses world record despite dominant win
Shericka Jackson still remains unbeaten over 200 metres since her first World Athletics Championships title in 2022 but the world record still remains elusive.
Running in the penultimate event of this season’s Wanda Diamond League in Brussels earlier today, Jackson had a commanding performance, storming to 21.48 the fourth fastest time in history.
The time also eclipsed the championship record, 21.64 run by another famous Jamaican, Merlene Ottey, in 1991.
The mark, though quick, was shy of her personal best, 21.41 done at the World Championships a month ago, and eve further afield of her world record aim.
Jackson will now turn her attention to the Wanda Diamond League final in Eugene, Oregon, where she will have her final opportunity this season to take a crack at Florence Griffiths-Joyner’s 21.34-second clocking, done at the Seoul Olympics in 1988.
Much further back, was the Bahamas’ Anthonique Strachan, who clocked 22.31 for second, while the United States’ Jenna Prandini was third in 22.47.
In a press conference ahead of the Brussels meet yesterday, Jackson had indicated she would be attempting to break the world record, but said if it doesn’t happen, that she wouldn’t panic.
“If I do (break the world record), then that will ease a little pressure going into Eugene, but if not, we have another shot in Eugene,” she had said.
