ST GEORGE’S College (STGC) are all but through to the next stage of the ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup after a 7-2 drubbing of José Martí in Group F at Winchester Park yesterday.

Four goals from Brian Burkett, who took his tally for the season to 16, led the North Street school to their seventh win from as many games.

They remain one of only two teams, along with St Andrew Technical High School, yet to drop a point in this season’s competition.

The Neville ‘Bertis’ Bell-coached team stay atop the group with maximum 21 points, five more than second-place Campion and nine points ahead of José Martí in third on 12 points.

The North Street school just need one more point from their three remaining matches to secure their place in the next phase of the competition.

“Our first objective is to qualify from the zone and basically we did that today. Now we go for our objectives in the second round. So for now, it’s to get everybody sharp for the next round,” said assistant coach Marcel Gayle.

“ José Martí played well. They provided a few scary moments for us but our goalkeeper came up trumps. But if we seize games early in the first half, like we did, that was the catalyst for us today.”

St George’s took the lead through Tae-Sean Oneil after five minutes, before Burkett added goals in the eighth and 17th. Matthew Spence’s 19th-minute strike put them 4-0 up but Shemar Hanchard pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 39th minute.

After the break, Adjani Peart made it 5-1 in the 59th before Burkett added another two in the 62nd and 76th to make it 7-1, before Nathan Gordon pulled another goal back for the Spanish Town team 12 minutes from the end.
