Bronze for Dacres
THE BID by Jamaica's Fedrick Dacres to make Pan-American Games discus history fell a touch short yesterday. Competing in Santiago, Chile, Dacres won the bronze to add to the gold medals he took for Jamaica in 2015 and 2019. However, the event had a storybook ending for hometown thrower Lucas Nervi.
While Dacres recovered from a first-round foul to reach fourth place with a mark of 60.99m at the halfway stage, Nervi set a season's best 63.39m to win the gold medal to the delight of his friends and family. Colombian Mauricio Ortega took the silver with a throw taped at 61.86m.
The big Jamaican inched forward in round four to 61.25m but a final throw foul ended his bid for the gold medal. Victory would have made Dacres the first to win the men's discus three times at the Games.
Nevertheless, Dacres' bronze gave Jamaica two discus medals on the day as Samantha Hall had earlier finished second in the women's event.
Jamaica's other entrant, World University Games runner-up Kai Chang, placed sixth at 59.96m.
Jamaica's Odaine McPherson used his fast start to scrape into the men's 100m final which is set for today. McPherson was out fast in semifinal one and clocked 10.37 seconds and advanced on the strength of his time. His G.C. Foster College teammate Jevaughn Whyte placed fourth in his semi-final but missed the cut.
In the women's 100m, Jamaica's Mickael Moodie was eliminated after a seventh-place finish in the first semi-final
