Wolmer’s Girls set up for strong 2024
WOLMER’S GIRLS’ School did so well in 2023 at Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships that the ladies from Heroes Circle moved up from 8th in 2022 to 6th place. The school’s long-serving head coach, Michael Carr, reckons another solid campaign lies ahead in 2024.
Speaking at the PA Benjamin Wesley Powell Excelsior Track Meet, Carr revealed that Wolmer’s added to his staff on the track and off it.
Wolmer’s dominated Class 3 in 2023, with its 4x100 team going virtually undefeated, with sprinter Natrese East and hurdler Tiana Madison winning individual gold at Champs.
“It’s a good look going forward, in simple terms. Of course, the classes have changed now. Three of the girls from that 4x1 are now in Class 2 and East is left behind, but apart from that, I think, overall, we’re where I expected to be,” Carr said, in response to a request for a 2024 Wolmer’s forecast.
Three members of that super relay team laid down fine performances on the grass track at Excelsior High School.
East, the 2023 Class 3 Champs 200 winner, zoomed through her Class 3 150 heat, and Kaysian Sewell and Madison logged the fastest and third-fastest 300-metre times of the day, 42.19 and 42.97 seconds, respectively.
Madison won the Champs Class 3 80-metre hurdles this year, adding to her Class 4 70-metre title from 2021.
Some of Clarke’s optimism rests with the addition to his coaching staff of veteran expert Phillip Davey, who helped Manchester High to win Girls’ Championships in 1994 and 1995.
“As you know, we’ve added a new coach to the programme, Mr Davey, and that tells you we’re expanding. So we’re spreading our wings in the middle distance now. So I’m very optimistic about what the season can bring,” said Carr.
He also hinted at the pending appearance of a new face in the famous Wolmer’s maroon and gold.
“I won’t release the names yet, but you will see. One of them is a real outstanding person, Class 1 region,” Carr hinted.
Among the boys, 2023 Central 200-metre champion Rahiem Pinnock of St Jago High logged the fastest high school time over 300 metres – 35.96 seconds. Only senior competitor Paul Henry of the New Era Track Club went quicker all day.
Henry’s time was 35.38 seconds.
