PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):

Cyclist Nicholas Paul and track athlete Michelle Ahye were crowned the national sports personalities of the year on Friday in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) .

Paul was named Sportsman of the Year, and Ahye was Sportswoman of the Year during the T&T Olympic Committee’s annual awards ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

The awards are given to athletes who have showcased the most outstanding performances during the year under review.

Paul, who also copped the People’s Choice Award, pedalled to three medals, two gold and one silver, at the Pan American Elite Track Cycling Championships this past June.

The 25-year-old also captured silver in the men’s sprint at the World Track Cycling Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, and he topped it off with a gold medal in the men’s sprint and a silver in the keirin at the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile.

Ahye had a rough international season, but the former Olympic finalist ended the competitive year with a bronze medal finish at the Pan American Games.

The 31-year-old was the only T&T sprinter to reach the semi-final round in the women’s 100 metres at the World Athletics Championships this past August in Budapest, Hungary, but she finished joint fifth in a time of 11.18 seconds, which ended her quest for a podium finish.

Both Paul and Ahye are looking forward to making their marks on their respective sports at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France.
