AFTER SUFFERING a 1-0 loss against Cavalier, who were snapping a three-game streak, Dunbeholden FC got back to winning ways with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over hosts Vere United in their Jamaica Premier League encounter at the Wembley Centre of Excellence yesterday.

The Lenworth Hyde-coached side had to do it the hard way to secure their sixth win of the campaign, with Vere taking the lead in the 49th minute when Kemar Beckford stabbed home from close range following some good work down the left side from Daniel Daley.

It was always going to be difficult to keep the ever-probing Dunbeholden side off the scoresheet as Vere United only had one regular defensive starter in their line-up.

Constant pressure would bear fruit in the 55th minute for Dunbeholden when Shakeen Powell found himself unmarked at the back post and beat the advancing Roje Williams to level things.

That goal seemed to have ignited the visiting side, who continued to probe at the Vere goal, and they would get the go-ahead goal when Zackiya Wilks found himself one on one with Williams, who took down Wilks in the area, resulting in a penalty to the visitors.

Defender Chevoy Watkin stepped up to convert what would be the winning goal in the contest.

Hyde was pleased that his charges were able to bounce back to winning ways away from home.

“We lost last week and we wanted these three points. I thought my team played well right throughout the game, and we are pleased with the performance.”

Hyde added that his team still needed to fix some defensive issues come next week.

“I don’t like the fact that we are still giving up goals. We have to get that right for the second round. We need to fix our defence line. Devon Hodges will be coming in this week, and that should add some punch to our backline,” said Hyde.

Vere United assistant coach Jermaine Douglas could not hold back his disappointment after losing a game in which his team scored first.

“I thought we deserved more from this game despite us giving up some soft goals. We cannot keep giving up those kinds of goals at this level, and we have to get our backline sorted out.”
