VADODARA, India (CMC):

HAYLEY MATTHEWS produced an impressive bowling spell to set up the Mumbai Indians Women five-wicket victory over the Gujarat Giants Women when the Women’s Premier League continued yesterday.

Matthews grabbed 3-16 from four overs of disciplined off spin to help dismiss the Giants for a paltry 120 in their 20 overs.

She was ably assisted by Amelia Kerr and Nat Sciver-Brunt, who took two wickets apiece.

Her West Indies teammate Deandra Dottin made just seven off six balls, with Harleen Deol topscoring with 32 off 31 balls and Kashvee Gautam hitting 20 from 15 balls in an otherwise lacklustre batting display by the Giants.

Player-of-the-Match Sciver-Brunt then returned to blast 57 from 39 balls, inclusive of 11 boundaries, as the Mumbai Indians easily chased down their target, finishing on 122 for five of 16.1 overs.

Matthews made 17 off 19 balls, batting at the top of the order.

It was the Mumbai Indians’ first win of the tournament in their second game, while the loss dropped the Giants’ record to 1-2.
